About Us – Groups involved- Oil Free Otago

The ten VCW committee members are introduced here:

One of the groups contributing to the Valley Community Workspace is Oil Free Otago and Rosemary Penwarden is on the Committee.

Oil Free Otago is a group of Dunedin citizens with two main aims:

  1.       To oppose deep sea drilling off our coast – and offer an alternative, that is,
  2.       To promote the transition to a socially just, low carbon economy for our city

Both aims establish positive action towards the kind of society we need in order to survive and thrive in a climate-changed world.

Oil Free Otago found the Valley Workspace and began talking with North East Valley residents about using it to promote sustainable and environmentally friendly forms of low carbon transport and other projects. We are interested in working cooperatively, sharing space, tools, resources and skills, with an emphasis on mentoring and guiding young people to learn practical skills and self-reliance.

We’ve begun working on a couple of vehicles – a Honda City which, when complete will have 88 lithium ion phosphate batteries, a 144 amp hour capacity and a range of around 160km, – and a Hilux ute. Both will be shared community vehicles. The workspace has a working four post hoist, a chain hoist, a recently purchased full set of mechanic’s tools, and space available for hire.

If you would like to be on the mailing list to find out about upcoming workshops, contact Rosemary.
